This program is directed by Professor Rebecca Richards-Kortum, director of Rice 360°: Technology Solutions for World Health and founder of the Beyond Traditional Borders initiative. She has collaborated extensively with researchers at UT M.D. Anderson and many other leading institutions to develop new, non-invasive cancer detection technologies that use high-resolution, optical imaging; the use of fluorescent imaging agents for cancer detection; biophysical studies of the light-scattering properties of cells and tissues; and the use of fiber-optic sensors for in vivo detection of cancer.

Jennifer West, Ph.D.
Core Leadership Team Member
|
Isabel C. Cameron Professor of Bioengineering
Chair of the Department of Bioengineering
Rice University
jwest@rice.edu
Professor Jennifer West's translational research in biomaterials and tissue engineering focuses on the synthesis, development, and application of novel biofunctional materials and on the use of biomaterials and engineering approaches to study biological problems. She has been a pioneer in the use of nanotechnology for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics and she assists in the development of the BioE Med Into Grad core course curriculum. Professor West is deeply committed to excellence in education. Since 1998, she has worked to broaden the pipeline of well-educated and highly-skilled leaders in the field of biotechnology. In 2006, she was named an HHMI Professor for her research and training programs in bionanotechnology research.
